In a groundbreaking move to reduce smoking prevalence and improve public health, the UK government has announced plans to introduce a phased ban on cigarette sales to individuals born after 2008. This ambitious initiative, part of a larger strategy to achieve a smoke-free generation, will see the legal age for cigarette purchases increase annually, ultimately preventing anyone born after 2008 from legally buying tobacco products.
The legislation also includes provisions to restrict the sale of e-cigarettes, or vapes, in a bid to curb youth nicotine addiction. The new measures aim to save thousands of lives and billions of pounds for the National Health Service (NHS), currently burdened with the high costs associated with smoking-related illnesses.
According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), an estimated 64 million people in the UK were smokers in 2022, representing approximately 13% of the adult population. A smoking ban, as suggested by the ONS, is expected to significantly reduce smoking rates, leading to improved public health outcomes.
